Val shared her life lessons in her memoir, Care Enough:

  1. There is nothing more dangerous than fear itself

  2. Girls are intellectual equals

  3. The media can be a powerful ally in seeking social reform

  4. Make the most of the gifts you were born with

  5. The most effective way of dealing with a problem that needs changing is to work on the big canvas

  6. Hands up help people to get ahead, hand-outs don't

  7. No experience in life is a waste unless you fail to learn from it

  8. Life's not always fair

  9. Acquire a 'butter wouldn't melt in your mouth' smile

  10. Needs don't have labels

  11. Always, always ask 'the people'

  12. Positive psychology pays

  13. Who you know really does count

  14. Arrive with an open mind

  15. Speak as one. Hear the roar.
